Nearly 50 years ago, an entire generation of young Americans engaged the political process as never before. Motivated in part by the election of a young, optimistic president and the enormous challenges of social inequality and war, they organized, seized the power of new technologies and media, and made themselves heard in a way that helped shape what America has become today.

History may very well be repeating itself. Against the backdrop of enormous economic upheaval, wars on two fronts, the ever-looming threat of terrorism and the debate over health care reform, many young professionals from all parts of the country are blogging, Tweeting and podcasting their way into the fray, connecting to each other and the broader world around them in unprecedented and effective ways. But despite its promise to revolutionize political discourse and interaction, technology has its limits. Voting remains the most powerful way for young professionals to express themselves and make a difference in their communities.

While there’s no national race to drive the strong turnout we saw in 2008, the choices we have to make in 2009 are no less important, particularly here in Charlotte. So to help prepare you for the upcoming elections, we’re inviting you to engage the political process in a much more local, personal and timeless manner. Join us on October 15, 2009 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Chamber’s Belk Action Center, where the Charlotte Chamber and the Greater Charlotte Hospitality and Tourism Alliance will host the 2009 Candidate’s Reception at the Charlotte Chamber. At the Candidate’s Reception, you’ll meet the candidates whose names will appear on your ballot in November. Ask them directly about the issues important to you. Share with them your concerns about schools, transit and the economy. Network with City leaders and interested citizens across all demographics. And do it all while enjoying amazing (and free!) food and drinks from some of Charlotte’s finest restaurants.

The event is completely free, but make sure you register in advance. You can also find detailed information on directions, parking and other logistics at the Chamber’s website, but I encourage you all to ride the LYNX Blue Line to the Third Street Station and walk the two-plus blocks to the Chamber.
