Charlotte is the center of the nation’s sixth largest urban region and home of many of the nation’s top firms. The 2012 Hoover’s Database, a Dun & Bradstreet Company, provides evidence of Charlotte’s position as a major corporate capital. The data includes 4,277 firms in Charlotte/Mecklenburg with sales of $1 million or more annually. Another impressive indicator of Charlotte’s business strength is that 27 companies in this listing reported sales exceeding $1 billion. Of the million dollar corporations located in Charlotte with multiple locations, 971 are headquartered here. Six of these headquartered firms are ranked among the Fortune 500 list of largest national companies. Those operations rank Charlotte eighth in total number of headquartered Fortune 500 companies in the nation.  

The diversity of Charlotte’s million dollar companies can be seen in the chart placed below. The largest industry segments represented are services with 1,639 establishments, followed by wholesale trade with 629 establishments, then construction with 592 establishments and manufacturing with 455.  The variety of industry proves that Charlotte is not just a financial service center but is a community with a very diverse economy.  It also confirms that despite the national decline in manufacturing in recent years, the industry still holds strong. Charlotte boasts a versatile business environment and diverse industry sectors — characteristics that any region would be proud to have.
