Demographic Profile Maps

As Charlotte and Mecklenburg County continue their overall growth, it is necessary to understand how change is distributed throughout the community.   The following maps show an analysis of intra-county growth trends and some of the infrastructure that supports it.

The maps are accessible as PDF documents and require a 'viewer' program to be read. The FREE viewer can be downloaded from Adobe.

Mecklenburg County, NC - Major roads and pinpoints charlotte city limits.

Total Population -     As the census tracts portray, strong growth is apparent in areas such as Ballantyne (South) and University (Northeast).  The lake areas situated in the North are also experiencing an upward growth trend along with the Southwest Region.  Although Downtown shows the least amount of population, it has grown by over 10,000 residents in the past ten years and is projected to reach 100,000 by the year 2027.

Population Change -   There are several tracts in the SouthPark area and surrounding downtown that have experienced a decrease in population. This by no means should be looked upon as negative as Mecklenburg county is estimated to reach 1.2 million in population within the next ten years. Once again, the highest concentration of increase can be seen in the University and Ballantyne areas.

Asian Population - Growth and distribution patterns of Charlotte's Asian population.

Hispanic/Latino Population - Growth and distribution patterns of Charlotte's Hispanic/Latino population.

Households and Housing -   The number of households within Mecklenburg County increased by 25% between 2000 and 2007, reaching a total of 341,708.  The average household size however remained the same at about 2.5/hhld.  The losses seen within the census tracts are located directly outside downtown and in the East part of Charlotte.   Both can be attributed to redevelopment of previous residential buildings and/or subdivisions.  The high percentage increase of units within the downtown loop as seen on the map only solidifies the projection of an increased downtown population in the years to come.

Households - Number of household density in the county.

Housing Units - Actual residential units distributed throughout Mecklenburg county.

Change in Number of Housing Units - Where housing growth occurred between 2000 and 2007.

Housing Values -   The median value of owner-occupied housing units increased by 41% between 2000 and 2007, to $196,635.  As portrayed on the map, the census tracts containing the most expensive units are situated in the extreme North of the County or Lake Norman area as well as the South Park and Downtown Areas.

Per Capita Income -   Per Capita Income levels in 2007 have been estimated to be $36,594, an increase of nearly 34% over 2000.  Consistent with the housing values map, the higher income census tracts are located in the Lake Norman and South Charlotte Areas.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools - Charlotte-Mecklenburg public school system is the largest in NC, with over 112,000 students in the 2003-2004 school year.  They were accommodated in 88 elementary, 29 middle and 17 high schools, plus 17 special program schools.  The student body is ethnically diverse: 43% white, 43% African American, 8% Hispanic, 4% Asian, and 2% Native American.  The map displays the location fo the high and middle schools.  The elementary schools are too numerous to display on this map but information on them and the other schools may be obtained at the CMS website.
