Interview of the Month

This month Engage Charlotte interviewed Tim Belk, chairman and CEO of Belk, Inc., to find out how young professionals can help Charlotte continue to be a great place to live and work. Mr. Belk outlined four major areas of focus for future civic leaders: build a stronger footprint in the areas of energy and health care (in addition to the strong financial footprint); build stronger relationships with Raleigh, N.C., and Washington, D.C.; find funding solutions to our transportation needs; and encourage diverse leaders and companies to help our community prepare for the future. Diversity can be an important recruiting tool and an important dimension to our community’s quality of life. >>read more

Did You Know?

Driving around Charlotte it’s easy to see the city’s growth manifest in terms of high-rise condominiums and retail developments. Not so readily visible, however, is the expansion of Charlotte’s economy that enables this growth. You’ll be surprised at how many companies decide to grow their business in the Queen City.

Event Recap

On Wednesday, August 19, 2009, young professionals gathered at the Charlotte Chamber to learn how Deloitte has revamped the relationship between today’s workforce and the workplace with the use of a new concept, Mass Career Customization. Wendy Taylor, Cindy Fritz and Dawn Lowery of Deloitte described how this new concept can help professionals evaluate and integrate career and life plans and goals. The speakers described how the traditional view of corporate structure as a vertical ladder has been replaced with the idea that the workplace is a lattice – you can move vertically (higher into management), laterally (into a different role, similar responsibility), or remain stationary (with similar or reduced responsibility). Gone are the days when failure to move up in the organization implied you were on your way out. This nontraditional approach has allowed Deloitte to enhance employee retention and satisfaction, while matching the best person to a particular job. You can learn more about this new approach to manage your career at www.masscareercustomization.com.
