News

Under Michael Juby’s expert leadership, Engage Charlotte has transformed from a fledgling volunteer organization into a sustainable component of the Charlotte Chamber’s outreach efforts, and many thanks are due Michael for his dedication. On June 24, Michael handed over leadership of the organization to the new Chair Joel Canino and Vice Chair Meigan Powell. Take a moment and get to know Engage Charlotte’s new leadership team.

Joel Canino is an associate at Defender Capital, a private wealth management boutique in Uptown Charlotte. A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Joel attended Palm Beach Atlantic University in Palm Beach, Florida, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in international business. In addition to his involvement with Engage Charlotte, Joel serves on the marketing committee for Hands on Charlotte, as a coach/mentor for 2Xsalt Ministries, vice president of public relations for Toastmasters International, and is a fundraiser for the Charlotte Chamber.

Meigan Powell of Powell & Partners Creative has used her skills as a media buyer, planner and marketer to enhance the success of brands such as Wachovia, GM, Zatarains, Arby’s and Benihana, to name a few. Her wide-ranging New York agency experience spans projects as diverse as devising media plans for Six Flags theme parks, and implementing all local Hispanic broadcast buys and merchandising for Heineken, Heineken Light and Amstel Light.

Event Recap

On June 24, Engage Charlotte hosted “In Your Face,” a luncheon designed to help young professionals understand the balance between virtual and in-person networking. Panelists Lou Solomon of Interact Skills, Kyle Bumgardner of WebsiteBiz, and Georgia Holmes Doran of the University of South Carolina Moore School of Business provided attendees with valuable advice regarding how to employ the Web to maximize the benefit of in-person networking. The panelists were adamant that in-person networking is the gold standard and can’t be replaced by any amount of virtual interaction. They advised that people do business with those they trust, and the only way to build such a relationship is face to face.

The panelists provided unique advice resulting from their extensive experience with virtual networking. Lou Solomon told attendees that building your “brand” was crucial to success in marketing yourself. She advised that a careful, consistent and deliberate effort is required to present yourself successfully to others in both virtual and in-person interactions, creating a “brand” of your own. Georgia Holmes Doran provided some sobering statistics for jobseekers: more than 60 percent of job opportunities are now through personal referrals. Gone are the days of one-click job applications over the internet. Your success as a job seeker is now dependent on whom you know. Finally, Kyle Bumgardner told attendees that online networking is an all or nothing proposition; don’t create a LinkedIn profile and fill it out partially. Create a complete online presence or don’t make one at all. Mr. Bumgardner also advocated developing your own strategy for working the room at networking events. Before you show up, have a plan for starting and politely exiting conversations and have an idea of who in the room you’d like to meet.
