Networking 101: Networking for Introverts
If you are shy or introverted but recognize that networking is a must do for your career, considering these tips.
- Have a clear understanding of what you do and how you are unique. In networking it is important to help give people a clear, concise vision of what you are about but also to be memorable. Consider what it is about you that sets you apart from others in your industry and be sure to mention it when you are sharing information about yourself and your field with others.
- Hold volunteer positions in organizations. This is a great way to stay visible and give back to groups that have helped you. It can also help those of us who are rusty brush up on our networking skills in low risk situations.
- Be targeted. Attend meetings of organizations in your field of interest and get involved. You never know where you are going to meet someone who can give you a lead.
- Be results oriented. Treat networking like any other aspect of your job duties. Stay organized and track your networking meetings. Keep a list of your contacts and update it frequently with the names of any leads given to you. When networking, ask if you can follow-up the conversation with a phone call or even an in person meeting in the near future.
