ABB to build $90 million
plant in Huntersville, create 100 jobs

ABB Inc. announced today that it will construct a plant in Huntersville to manufacture high-voltage and extra-high-voltage cables used to improve the efficiency of power transmission over long distances.

ABB, a Swedish/Swiss concern known worldwide for its power and automation technologies, will invest $90 million in the new facility, which is projected to come on line in early 2012.  The company expects to hire 100 at plant start-up to fill a mix of engineering, technical and production positions.

The new cable facility will be constructed on a 22-acre site in Commerce Station, formerly known as North Mecklenburg Industrial Park, just south of Huntersville at the intersection of Highway 115 and Verhoeff Drive.

At a press conference in Huntersville today, Deputy Secretary of Commerce Dale Carroll confirmed that North Carolina's Economic Investment Committee approved today a Job Development Investment Grant to support the consolidation.

“The ABB cable facility dovetails perfectly with our efforts to recruit more energy-related investment to Charlotte-Mecklenburg,” says Bob Morgan, Charlotte Chamber president.  “We are delighted ABB has chosen to invest here and welcome them as yet another key player in our growing and vibrant energy sector.”

Over the past 13 months, the Charlotte Chamber worked closely with the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Lake Norman Regional Economic Development Corporation, the Town of Huntersville, the North Carolina Community College System, Central Piedmont Community College, ElectriCities of North Carolina, and the Mecklenburg County Commission to secure ABB's commitment to Huntersville, Mecklenburg County and North Carolina.
