SPX to Expand and Create 180 New Jobs

North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue announced today in a press conference at the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce that SPX Corporation will create 180 new jobs in North Carolina over the next five years. SPX, a Fortune 500 company, plans to invest $70 million to expand its operations and global headquarters in Charlotte.

“SPX is proud to call North Carolina home, and we remain committed to growing our global manufacturing business so we can continue to make valued contributions to the economy of this great state and a lasting, positive impact on the communities in which so many of our employees work and live,” said SPX Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Christopher J. Kearney. “We are extremely grateful to the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, Governor Perdue and her staff, Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, and the Mecklenburg County Commission for their invaluable assistance and support of SPX’s future expansion plans."

SPX plans to move into a new global headquarters building that will house its current 252 employees as well as the 180 new positions. SPX is currently located in Ballantyne Corporate Park in south Charlotte. The company plans to move into a newly constructed office building in Ballantyne Corporate Park by the end of 2012. While individual wages for the planned 180 new jobs will vary by job function, the overall average is expected to be $82,917 a year, not including benefits. The Mecklenburg County average annual wage is $48,776.

“Today we celebrate as SPX sinks its roots deeper into our community by deciding to expand the company’s global headquarters in Charlotte,” said Mayor Anthony Foxx. “This decision makes sense. Charlotte has a highly skilled workforce, an affordable cost of living and our airport is the gateway to the world. We look forward to SPX’s continued growth and engagement in the Charlotte community.”

The Charlotte Chamber would like to thank Governor Beverly Perdue, N.C. Department of Commerce, N.C. Community Colleges, Mecklenburg County, City of Charlotte and Duke Energy for their assistance and support to this important project.

SPX is a leading provider of engineered products and technologies to customers in three core strategic markets: global energy infrastructure; process equipment that primarily serves the food and beverage industry; and diagnostic tools that play a vital role in vehicle servicing and repair. The company has operations in more than 35 countries.
