meeting for his outstanding service to the chamber.

Chamber CEO and President Bob Morgan presented the 2012 Ken Akers Award to Michael Barnes at the Board of Advisors meeting on November 26 at The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte.  Barnes is vice president of Unique Background Solutions, a background screening and drug testing company.

“Michael Barnes is the epitome of what this award is all about. He devotes his time, energy and talent to the Chamber above and beyond the call of duty on a regular basis,” said Morgan.

Barnes involvement with the Chamber began in 2003 when he joined as a general level member. Since then, he’s served on the Ballantyne Chapter Board for 5 years, holding a leadership position for three of those years, ending as the Chapter Chair in 2010. In 2012, he was appointed to the Chamber’s Executive Committee serving as the Chapters Chair Liaison to the Board – a position that he will continue in 2013. He was also selected to represent the Chamber in the Community Building Initiative’s leadership program known as LDI.

A graduate of N.C. State University and UNC Charlotte, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Parks, Recreation and Tourism as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Earth Science.

In addition to his Chamber work, Barnes also currently serves as president of the Business Leaders of Charlotte.
