The U.S. Census Bureau released new data last month on the changing age group demographics of Charlotte and its 16-county region. The Charlotte Chamber research department’s analysis of the numbers between 2010 and 2015 shows growth among all age groups in Mecklenburg County and growth throughout the region in 20 to 29 year olds and those 65 and older, representing the two largest generations – millennials and baby boomers.

Those in their 30s and 40s, a much smaller proportion of the population, showed strong growth in Mecklenburg and closer-in suburban counties such as Cabarrus as well as York and Lancaster, South Carolina.

More rural counties such as Stanly, Anson and Cleveland saw declines in Generation Xers.

All counties except for Mecklenburg saw declines in the infant population, while the number of five to 14 year olds increased in Mecklenburg and most bordering suburban counties.
